PINK MITTS!

Thursday, December, 8, 2011 12:30 AM

Our Club has pink mitts for sale!!! They’re knitted and wonderfully warm as they are lined with a light fleece-type material. They’re pink with an appropriate ribbon symbol because some of the proceeds from the sale of these mitts will go to breast cancer projects through the Susan G. Komen Cure Fund for Breast Cancer and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. As well, our Rotary Club will benefit as it will realize some proceeds as the sellers of the mitts.

So, please, consider purchasing some of our mitts at $10 a pair! They make great gifts for birthdays and other special occasions. Surprise a special lady for Valentine’s Day! Fill the mitts with candies and chocolates and really make her day!

They’re available in youth, medium and large sizes.

The Rotary Outdoor Gym

Friday, November, 4, 2011 1:49 PM

The two Whitby Rotary Clubs and the Town of Whitby are partnering in this exciting project to provide a Rotary Outdoor Gym at Heydenshore Park by the lake. The idea for such a gym originated in China just prior to the 2008 Olympic Games there. As of 2010, there are now over 100 such parks in Canada, and Whitby will soon have one.

The equipment, now being maufactured in Canada, is made by a company called Green Gym and is very similar to what would be found in an indoor gym. There is a wide range of equipment to suit all needs. To withstand the vagaries of weather, it is robust and weatherproof employing the weight of the user for resistance rather than weights. To learn more about these fitness parks, go to www.greengym.ca

An integral part of the facility is an interlocking brick courtyard. To help offset the cost of the equipment, bricks are being sold to be engraved in whatever way the purchaser wishes. Buying a brick will not only help the Rotary Clubs of Whitby and Whitby Sunrise pay for this project but, as well, will allow the purchaser to:

- provide a really interesting way to indicate interest in and support of the project,
- recognize or pay tribute to a family member or friend,
- celebrate an occasion such as a special anniversary, birthday, or graduation and
- boast a special accomplishment such as losing weight or beating a disease or illness.

Brick Cost - $200 each. Company logos can be engraved at an extra cost of $50.

To buy a brick, e-mail info@rotarywhitby.org to indicate your interest. You will receive a reply and arrangements will be made for you to receive a form to show the wording for your brick and to set up a payment method.

The Rotary Clubs appreciate very much the participation of the Town of Whitby and Unilock Ltd.

WORLD POLIO DAY

Monday, October, 24, 2011 12:00 AM

This is a Day to make everyone aware of the effort that is being made to eradicate polio from around the world. It is a Day set aside by the World Health Organization which has partnered in this mission with Rotary International, UNICEF, and the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta. We are so close to seeing the end of polio as a disease that had the potential to cripple millions of children around the world in the past. Most children today do not even know the word, polio, although their parents, and certainly their grandparents, would have been all too familiar with it.

Amazing strides have been made in eradicating this disease in 125 countries. But there are still 4 countries where polio exists. There, many children can still be infected and crippled by this deadly disease. Because the polio virus is easily spread, we must still vaccinate our children in countries where polio is a disease of the past in case a visitor might bring the virus to one of our countries and cause an outbreak. Imagine the millions of dollars that will be saved when polio is eradicated for good around the whole world and money will not have to be spent to provide vaccine for the children of the world!

If you want more information or want to make a financial donation to help end this fight to eradicate polio, please be in touch with the Rotary Club of Whitby through its e-mail address info@rotarywhitby.org. You will receive a reply e-mail to give you information you want and need.

HELP END POLIO NOW!
