Kids Against Hunger fills bellies at home and around the worldKids Against Hunger fills bellies at home and around the worldKids Against Hunger Canada has given out more than 3.5-million meals in Haiti and in local communities from its Peterborough warehouse. It all began when the founder Carl Nabein watched a commercial for Kids Against Hunger U.S., and was confronted with how to help people dealing with food insecurity locally and globally. “Is it better to bring fish to children? Or is it better to teach them how to fish when they're dying? They can't fish on their own,” said Nabein. |

Jodi Millen, Executive Director of Durham Outlook for the Needy was our guest his morning. She presented details about the extensive fundraising campaign to build a new home for the Charity which would be double in size compared to the current location. The new building would better serve the needs of their patrons who visit the Centre for many reasons. The new Centre would become a one-stop, accessible building that will meet the needs of individuals in the community - including meals and support and treatment of mental illnesses to name a few. The Charity is best known for the operation of St. Vincent Pallotti's Kitchen serving over 50,000 meals a year. Through partnerships with other non-profit organizations and local churches, meal tickets are distributed free-of-charge to individuals and families experiencing poverty and food insecurity. For those unable to access free tickets, a four-course, restaurant-style meal costs $1.50. Children under 12 always eat free. The restaurant style environment represents a unique difference from other "Soup Kitchens". Patrons visit often and are served the same as if they were eating at a restaurant. Hundreds of volunteers are participating in various programs and Jodi encouraged our club to get in on the action. Other local Rotary Clubs have already partnered with the Charity. The new facility will be located at 227 Simcoe Street South - this location is within 1 square block of 50% of its patrons. Jodi was asking the club to consider supporting the building campaign. Durham Outlook for the Needy is a fully registered Charity. Based on 2015 financial records, about 12% of their total revenue stream came from Governments. The Charity is not receiving any funding from United Way. Any donations are tax deductible. Poverty has stricken this area of the Durham Region more so than others. No one should go hungry in this day and age. However, It happens more often than the public seems to be aware of. For further information please visit http://durhamoutlook.com/ .

4 Way TestThe Four-Way Test Means BusinessBy Nancy Shepherdson Source: Rotary International Website At any Walgreens drugstore in the United States, you’re likely to see The Four-Way Test hanging on the wall in the manager’s office and in the pharmacy. These plaques are tangible evidence of a philosophy that has guided the company’s corporate culture for decades, championed by Rotarian Charles R. Walgreen Jr., the son of its founder. A member of the Rotary Club of Chicago, Walgreen, who died in February at age 100, informally used the test as early as 1947 while serving as president of the drugstore chain. Dick Schneider, who started working there that year, recalls getting a copy of the test and being told by Walgreen that “we use it as a compass around here.” In speeches, Walgreen often referred to it as “a prescription for living, a new version of the golden rule.” The company formally adopted the test in 1955. Walgreen first heard of The Four-Way Test from fellow club member Herbert J. Taylor. Taylor came up with the four simple precepts in 1932, when Club Aluminum Company, where he was president, was facing almost certain bankruptcy. In the depths of the Depression, no one was buying much aluminum. But Taylor thought that if he could convince his employees to do the right thing in every situation, they might at least win sales from their competitors. “So one morning,” he would often recount, “I leaned over my desk, rested my head in my hands. In a few moments, I reached for a white paper card and wrote down what had come to me – in 24 words.” Five years later, Club Aluminum was back in the black. Taylor always credited The Four-Way Test with its resurgence. Rotary International adopted the test in 1943, and Taylor became RI president in 1954. At one point, our organization assumed the copyright on his test. Now in the public domain, it has been adopted by scores of companies in the 75 years since he thought up its four principles, which remain relevant today.“ The Four-Way Test was ahead of its time as a model of business ethics,” notes Paul Bube, a professor of religion at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., USA. Several years ago, Bube spoke at the Rotary Club of Salina, Kan., about business ethics and The Four-Way Test. “Taylor developed it during a time when scandalous business practices contributed to the Great Depression,” he says. “The kind of corporate scandals we are seeing today are reminiscent of the scandals Taylor witnessed. I believe The Four-Way Test is a vision which, if followed, can be a powerful force for good in the world.” Is it the TRUTH?“You could call it the sleep-at-night test,” says Allan Resnick, vice president of the Walgreens legal division. “I always tell people that at Walgreens, you don’t need to ask permission to do the right thing. You just do it.” For Resnick, though, and many of the people who use it in their daily business dealings, The Four-Way Test is much more than a guide to personal behavior. It’s a compelling business model that’s actually a powerful workforce management tool.Perhaps the most useful aspect of the test, Resnick says, is its ability to bring ethically minded people together. “People see my plaque as soon as they enter my office. When I interview people and talk about the culture of the company, I’m gauging their reaction. Are they indifferent to it? Excited? You get a feeling about whether people want to work in an ethical culture.”Walgreens expends a fair amount of effort to expose as many of its 200,000 employees as possible to The Four-Way Test. And, especially at Walgreens headquarters outside of Chicago, even non-Rotarians such as Resnick apply it routinely to ethical dilemmas. He recalls how, after the sale of some property several years ago, the company’s real estate division received a “fairly large sum of money” that should have gone to the buyers instead. “[The buyers] wouldn’t have even known we had it,” he says. “Many companies would have just cashed the check. They were fairly astonished to receive the money from us.” Is it FAIR to all concerned? In Texas, USA, Realtor and Rotarian Tony Weissgarber adopted The Four-Way Test and says he greatly prefers it to the National Association of Realtors’ nine-page “fine-print ethics statement.” Weissgarber even touted the test in a letter that was printed in the association’s magazine. The gist of his message was, “If Realtors need that many words to say what we believe in, how can we really know what we believe?” He adds: “I told them that if you use The Four-Way Test faithfully, you never need anything more. When I’m in front of a prospect, I just think, is this fair? That helps in all kinds of situations.”Weissgarber believes so strongly in the test that he’s urged all his fellow members in the Rotary Club of San Antonio at the Dominion to adopt it in their businesses and post it on their Web sites. At least one member took him up on the challenge: Jim Landers, a photographer with 14 people working for him, who says the test “reinforced what I believed in all along, but it’s like a very fine paintbrush you use to paint in the details. It’s a philosophy I have in the background of my business all the time, helping me to provide a good role model.” Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?Kit Lindsay, owner of Lindsay Transmission in Warrensburg, Mo., USA, was 24 years old when he received the Rotary Club of Warrensburg’s first Four-Way Test Award, which is given to non-Rotarians. He was nominated after a Rotary officer visiting town needed to have his motor home repaired when it broke down. Another local shop had proposed a transmission replacement, but Lindsay fixed the problem for $200. “We have a saying at my business: We do what’s right.”That was 20 years ago. Now a Rotarian and chair of his club’s Four-Way Test Award committee, Lindsay has introduced a great many local people to the test. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?RI Director-elect Lars-Olof Fredriksson encourages the use of The Four-Way Test around the world. A member of the Rotary Club of Äänekoski, Finland, Fredriksson has tried to apply the test throughout his careers in public relations and the Finnish air force because, he says, it always works.“Making profit is right, but doing it without ethical consciousness, moderation, and without responsibility for the consequences is indefensible,” he explains. “The tenets of truth, honesty, decency, and morality are now more complicated than before and create the often-used explanation, It all depends. But The Four-Way Test gives a bright, clear answer in any situation.”

Rotary RIP January 19, 2016RIP TUESDAY JAN.19/16
The meeting was opened with the singing of O Canada, followed by our Toast and “thought for the day”
President Larry
Opening remarks as to our need to reflect on the latest suicide bomber in Pakistan who for his own need for “glory” killed 13 police officers who were standing guard on Rotarians whose mission it was to administer the Polio Vaccine to families waiting patiently.
Larry had an ASK from Amarok Society for a donation. This also will go to the Board for a decision.
President Larry called upon Brandon to review an update on the Food Truck Frenzy as prepared by Kurt and Brandon.
The presentation as viewed on screen and talked through by Brandon was very well done and had an enthusiastic approach and manner. The Marketing needs after much background indicated a clear pattern of needs. The examples of these were foremost the need for a Presenting Sponsor in the value of $25,000.00 As well a Food Truck Sponsor worth $10,000,00 and down the line with a lesser value place on sponsors.
Brandon spoke about incorporating the annual Golf Tournament Sponsors.
In terms of the planning he broke down some of the absolute needs to plan a successful FTF
These are:
Operational needs...Joe Murray; Food Trucks (50) Ray Richardson; Equipment Needs President Larry; Sponsorship Needs and contacts... Grant and Brandon volunteer needs...Elizabeth and Joanne
Membership Matters session Sat. Jan 16/16. A report was requested from the attendee Joanne Ashley. In brief the session was excellent and put on by the Training Rotarians from our District. The common concerns for all Clubs were the continual need to see Membership growth. Consider reviewing your Club Vision statement and work on an “elevator speech” so that all members give a consistent message to potential members. Each participant had a similar form which we with great care filled out individually. We scored quite well!! There was much to learn and one surprise apparently was that we NEED a bigger Rotary pin as no one can read ours from hardly any distance. These are coming soon. Track anything you need to know on the Rotary Web-site. There is a vast amount of information re membership.
A special event for Morgan Wienberg will be held at the Nice Bistro organized by Ray and others to hear Morgan’s story again and have guests, particularly neighbouring Clubs.
The event will be held at Nice Bistro on February 9th in the evening. Please refer to the website for details and registration. The cost is $50.00 for dinner per person which includes a small donation towards the cause. This will help the International Committee with Global Grant applications. Space is limited to about 40 persons. Please visit our website or contact Ray for information or to reserve a spot.
The Rotary Club of Whitby – Brooklin Satellite meeting is on Wed. Jan 20th a visit with our fledgling Club. Encourage Rotarians to attend.
BREAKFAST WAS SERVED
HAPPY Bucks Time
Mike and Shauna did an admirable job of getting as much money for virtually nothing as anyone team I have witnessed.
A reflection of the “Whacky Bowling for Dollars” event which was held last Saturday brought in a few bucks. All attendees had a great time. See pictures.
The draw was close but now winner
Program today
An interesting program today as a new recruit and a seasoned Rotarian did their Classification talk. One of course was a re-classification Bill Irwin.
The new Rotarian Elizabeth Darbyshire sponsored by Joanne was indeed introduced by Joanne who told only a small amount as to having met Elizabeth from The Station Gallery House Tour, it was heartfelt and as Elizabeth was to Introduce herself the program was turned over to Elizabeth who told her story in a wonderful manner giving a glimpse of her upbringing, her marriage to Jim and her children Marshall and Abby. Elizabeth worked for 15 years with Bell Canada as an Associate Director of Revenue Assurance. She started her second career with Re/Max and after obtaining her broker’s license, she opened an independent brokerage called Property Match Realty where they focus on residential sales in Durham region and Scarborough. Elizabeth bring lots of volunteer experience to the club and will be a great asset.
Next was Bill Irwin doing his re-classification talk on his years as a lawyer and Municipal dealings which he enjoyed retiring in 1992. Bill talked about his time being the Town of Whitby Lawyer except that he was hired on a consulting basis and not as an employee. This kept him away from Town politics. Bill was heavily engaged in municipal law and tried to keep the developers honest. He was also involved in drafting many municipal by-laws for approval by Town Council. Did you know that Bill was also an Engineer? He forgot to mention this but it explains why Bill is the brain behind our Rotary Club. Our Constitution and By-Laws certainly show Bill’s expertise in this field.

Rotary RIP January 12, 2016RIP – Tuesday January 12
This will be a shortened version of the RIP as the writer of this week’s RIP is not a morning person --- not even close.
President Larry shared some updates about the Satellite Club and the youth initiatives they are involved in, including DECA. We are planning to have a joint meeting in the next couple of months to plan for the next two years and to give an opportunity all of our members to give their input on what they would like to see in in the club.
Some of the announcements included the Tacky Bowling night on Saturday January 16th 4-6PM at Leisure Lanes followed by fun, fellowship and food at the Royal Oak North with music by our friend Jeff Callery. Ray Richardson wore his very “tacky” Green Bay sweater that only a true Green Bay fan could love. Mike had another selection for the tacky section of his wardrobe – an outrageous pair of orange pants.
Joe Dale asked for volunteers on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society on Saturday January 30th – an email reminder will be sent out in the next couple of days.
Ray, along with other members, is working to plan an event on February 9th for Morgan Weinberg while she is here in Ontario. We are working on a Global Grant along with other clubs to support her work in Haiti. Tuesday February 9th in the evening was the date that most, by show of hands, were available to attend. Please stay tuned for more details.
Joanne Ashley, assisted two Vanna White impressionists, Betty Vetere and Mary Souter, presented 4 Steps to membership and used the Rotary Pin to illustrated this, complete with a ladder. The 4 steps being, The Pin in Action, The Pining Moment, Put a Spin on the Pin and Win with the Pin. What a great lesson and a good “message” for our new and tenured members alike.
Our Past District Governor, Brian Thompson and Ian Lancaster graced us with their presence.
The Sargent at Arms, Mike, was on fire – much like the colour of his pants. Fines were given out for not wearing one’s Rotary pins. He also fined those who snickered about last week’s tacky pants.
There were happy bucks from our newest members and Ray got fined at least a couple of times for … well, just being Ray.
Sean Lockhart is celebrating a birthday on Thursday and John Dale added “and many more” at the end of the club’s singing rendition of Happy Birthday.
Shauna gave some “comme ci, comme ca” bucks because she learned from a student at Value Village, while looking for something “tacky” that hipsters are now buying what was considered tacky and making it “hip.” She may have to borrow something on Saturday from Ray’s closet.
New member Dr. Chris is inviting members to the open house at his Wellness Clinic at 185 Brock St. N. on Saturday, January 16th from 10 am to 2 pm. You might need some touch ups before or after bowling.
We inducted 3 new members – Ken Chapman, a Past President of our club, Dr. Chris Cheung, a local chiropractor and Randal (Randy) Myers who is a retired businessman who is redefining what retirement is. We are thrilled to have them to join our fellowship.

Meeting Notes for January 5, 2016ROTARY RIP JANUARY 5, 2016Guests - Ken Chapman and Lorna Weston-Smyth
President Larry began the meeting by wishing everyone a very Happy New Year and then introduced his new format of reviewing the month ahead on the overhead projector. Covering the Bingo's, Meals on Wheels and upcoming events etc. All of this information is available on the website. All you have to do is click on Calendar under the Menu Section at the top of the website. No sign-in is required.
Shauna, Ray and Mike were decked out in their tacky shirts or in Mike's case pants. All for a good cause to promote the bowling on Saturday Jan. 16th at Leisure Lanes from 4 - 6. We will get 2 games and our shoe rental for $15.00. Fellowship will continue at the North Royal Oak at 6:30.
Fred announced it is time to pay our dues. If you get an e-mail reminder along with an account statement, you owe.
Larry read a thank you from St. Marks Church for our help in supplying 44 Whitby Families with Christmas baskets. The club donated $2,000 towards food and toy purchases.
After breakfast Sergeant Mike was more than pleased to fine Mary Anne for not bringing the hockey sweaters and Ray was fined for wearing his Green Bay sweater. Fred pointed out to Ray that the sweater vest should be washed in cold rather than hot water!!!
Happy Bucks -
Betty was HAPPY to have met Morgan's mother in Whitehorse and learning some of the background of Morgan and her family.
Bill paid a sad buck that Ray's sons would buy Ray a Green Bay Packers sweater. He wondered about their upbringing!!??
Joe D. was HAPPY to have his oldest son home for Christmas.
Simon was HAPPY to be back after missing a number of meetings.
Sheila was Happy and sad to have her daughter turn 13.
Des was HAPPY to have been on a "very safe" and probably on a "very expensive" Caribbean cruise before Christmas but sad that he missed our party.
Brandon and Betty both tried their luck at the 50/50 but their fingers were not in sync with their hopes. The pot remains.
The club sang Happy Birthday to Betty. She claims to have received her Old Age Security for 10 years!!
Mike introduced our guest speaker Lorna who is a life coach working with the John Maxwell Team.
Lorna works with business's and individuals to help them unlock their potential through Intentional Living.
She began with the quote "Life is like a parachute jump you have to get it right the first time" Lorna added that there is a difference between knowing where you want to go and knowing how to get there.
She stated that we all need to learn the power of focused energy and to take control to live the life you want not a life that just happens to you. People need to "Live with Intentionality"
Lorna said she would be happy to have people contact her if they are interested in taking part in the John Maxwell 30 day journey to Intentional Living. There will be a live presentation on the internet by John Maxwell on Thursday, January 7 at 5:00 pm. Here is the information received from Lorna:
"I'm excited that this Thursday, John C. Maxwell is having a live call talking more about his book Intentional Living, living a life that matters and creating such an impact that it changes lives.
And as a special gift, I would like to invite you to join us on the call. So if you're ready and serious about making 2016 the best year ever and making a real impact, register here to be added to the list and get the details for the call: http://bit.ly/010716
The Intentional Living book and 30 Day Journey that John will be referencing on the call can be found here: 30-Day Journey into Intentional Living "
Mike thanked Lorna for her interesting and informative talk and the meeting was adjourned.

John Dale introduced the guest speaker Gem Munro Director of Amarok Society.
Amarok Society was founded with one family at its centre: Dr. Tanyss Munro, Gem Munro and their four children. We teach extremely poor, uneducated mothers in the world’s worst slums to become neighbourhood teachers. They teach them how to read and write, and then teaches the mothers to be neighbourhood teachers, by educating their own and their neighbours’ children every day in their homes, with astonishing result. Gem spoke about Amarok's role to bring improvements to the worst school systems in the world. The presentation was very eye opening. Gem and other members of the Amarok Society are taking great risks when visiting these countries on a regular basis. They quite often find themselves in the middle of extremist areas. For complete details please visit the charitie's website at http://amaroksociety.org
They now have 24 Schools in 3 Countries.
Amarok-Society wishes a peaceful, joyful holiday season to all its friends and benefactors... ...with a gentle reminder that these are your neighbours' children. Now that the cold weather has finally arrived, it is time to focus on Canada's favoured sport, hockey. Two of our members are featured on the team picture below. Let's guess who they are. Your Sergeant might pick on you if you can't figure it out. If the below picture is not large enough for you, go to the photo albums on the website and click on Old Times Hockey.

President Larry thanked all of the members who helped with the float one way or another. Mr. and Mrs. Claus had such a great time. The experience was described as one which every member must enjoy at sometime in the future. From the Membership Committee
Who’s missing, you’re missing! The Membership Committee has been checking our membership list twice and we’ve “found out” that there have been a lot of empty chairs on Tuesday mornings! We miss you! We want you, yes, YOU, to join us on Tuesday mornings for fun and fellowship. We want to invite you to next week’s meeting and we definitely want to see you for our Christmas Celebration on Tuesday December 22nd – you don’t want to miss it! The Membership Committee has been working almost as hard as Santa’s elves to plan engaging meetings for January – but we need you, yes, YOU to make the meetings a success! A fine will be in order at the next meeting. That is of course assuming that the Sergeant-at-Arms reads the RIP.
Draw for 50/50 - Pot lives! It is over $500 and you can't win it unless you are there!!
Guest Speaker - Mark Woitzik, Lawyer and local Business Entrepreneur
Former Rotarian Mark Woitzik was introduced and spoke about Brock Street Brewery and their big plans for the future.

The have presented their plans to Town Council. There is still lots of studies and work to be done before building permits are issued. The best case scenario would be to have the construction completed by Christmas of 2016 but, more realistically, no later than by their 2nd anniversary of Spring of 2017.
Mark indicated that Brock Street Brewery has great plans in mind - looking to create Ontario's 2nd biggest Octoberfest right here in Whitby - will be called Brockoberfest - starting with a 4 day event and planning on extending to a two week event. Mark thanked Rotary for their support and wants to partner with Rotary on the new Brockoberfest.

Presidential change at the Rotary Club of WhitbyPresident Elect Larry Giofu takes over from President Leigh Elliott
President Leigh Elliot and her husband Andrew Elliott have returned to their native UK. Both were devoted and hard working Rotarian who added a great deal of value, expertise, enthusiasm and, of course, British culture during their 4 years as members of the Rotary Club of Whitby. They intend to continue to assist from long distance with the upcoming Food Truck Frenzy event. The Club is very appreciative of their contribution and service above self. The members, families and friends of the Rotary Club of Whitby are wishing both Leigh and Andrew a future filled with happiness and health. We hope to see them again soon.
President-Elect Larry Giofu has graciously agreed to enter his term as President 8 months early. The Club is looking forward to Larry' leadership until June 30, 2017.

Rotary RIP December 1st, 2015Rotary RIP for December 1, 2015
Meeting was called to order at 7am and John Dale introduced our guest speaker, Alison McMurter-Hughes. Alison practices law with McMurter and Associates in Whitby. She attended Osgood Hall and recently moved to Whitby and started a family. Alison spoke on the subject “Why do you need a will?” She explained that a will allows you to choose an executor to handle your affairs, consider gifts you may wish to make under your will, choose residual beneficiaries and establish trusts for specific needs such as a disabled child or a minor. She further explained how an estate would flow to various people in the absence of a will. Thank you Alison for an informative presentation!
Sergeant-at-Arms Report
Doug Freeman and Mike Finigan did their best to collect some funds- Gino is celebrating an anniversary but he was absent, they tried to fine Sean Lockhart for being late but apparently he “had permission”. They quickly turned to happy bucks – Betty was happy to visit her granddaughter at Dalhousie, Randy Myers was happy to be sponsoring a refugee family, Joanne Ashley was happy to attend book club last night despite failed attempts to connect with Leigh Elliott over the pond, and Joanne was happy that the red scarf Aids awareness project is now on display in downtown, Sheila was happy to celebrate her 20th anniversary in Punta Cana.
No winners from the card draw this week – the pot grows to over $500!
RADAR - Rotary Action for the Development of AIDS Responses4th Annual "Slice of Life" Evening in Honour of World AIDS Week. This event was held at the Abilities Centre in Whitby on November 25th.
Announcements
- Ray commented on the excellent Slice of Life event that took place last week with passionate people telling their stories.
- Santa Clause Parade is this weekend December 5th – volunteers needed for set up Friday afternoon and take down Saturday afternoon
- Tuesday December 8th is Club Christmas Party at the Centennial Building 6:30pm – if you have not yet paid please do so - Betty needs firm numbers
- There will still be a regular Rotary meeting in the morning of December 8th.
President Larry then called to order the Annual General Meeting and began with his Presidential Address. Larry reviewed the strategic plan and commented on our excellent progress. There are three avenues of service:
1. Community – enhance the lives of children in our community – wonderful involvement with Joanne’s House, nutrition through serving and delivering meals, and mental health initiatives with Ontario Shores. And share Rotary values with youth – accomplished through “You’ve got something to say”.Quality of life for persons living with disabilities – accomplished through Rotary at Work.Quality of life for persons living with Aids/HIV – accomplished through Slice of Life and Red Scarf project. Quality of life for seniors – accomplished through Day of Giving
2. International – our club under the direction of Ray Richardson is leading our district with grant knowledge and action
3. Club – goal to increase diverse membership – we admitted three new members last month, held events including the Mystery dinner, bowling, Brock Street brewery gathering and getting the
Brooklin Satellite Club going President Larry reminded us that there is still lots to do and thanked the Club for supporting him through his 19 month term!!
Fred Wynistorf, Treasurer, presented some financial stats:
Financial Highlights year 2014-2015 Rotary Club of Whitby
Reduced membership dues and meals structure for the year to cut the surplus from $6,355 (2014) to $599 (2015). The Board made further adjustments to the dues and meals structure for the 2015-2016 year to eliminate the subsidy factor created by non-attendance.
Total revenues were $166,245 and expenses were $215,769 for a gross deficit of $49,525. The bulk of the deficit is as result of the $50,000 donation to the Library of which $25,000 came from Edgeley Capital. The remainder of the deficit was financed from accumulated surpluses from prior years in our Community Service, Bingo and Edgeley Bank accounts.
Equity position dropped from $290,906 as of June 30, 2014 to $239,878 as of June 30, 2015 of which $175,680 is held in the Edgeley GIC account.
Total fundraising revenue dropped from $218,816 (2014) to $132,636 (2015).
Higher Food Truck Frenzy revenues (2014 +54K), bulk interest payment on Edgeley GIC (2014+12K) and the lack of Valentine’s Day Dance income (2014-21K) represent the main causes for the drop.
Bingo and Golf Tournament net revenues held steady at approx. $20,000 each.
Financial Highlights year 2014-2015 Neil Murkar charitable Foundation
Donations for the year were $13,045 up from $11,489 in 2014.
Expenses/donations for the year were $15,201 compared to $13,153 in 2014. Donations to World Community Service projects were $7,125 while local donations were $7,000.
The deficit of $2,156 was financed from accumulated surplus in the Bank Account from prior years.
Equity position as of year -end was $2,073 (2015) compared to $4,229 (2014).
Elections
Next were nominations for the Board positions – need a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 and we had 11 nominations and all new board members were elected by acclamation. The new Board members are as follows:
Steve Cornell, Gino Diraddo, Shauna Moore, Grant Souter, Mary-Ann Souter, Fred Wynistorf, Hans Rempel, Joanne Ashley, Larry Giofu, Sean Lockhart and Genesis Inibhunu.

Rotary RIP October 6, 2015Rotary – Oct. 6, 2015
Sergeant-at-Arms – John Dale
Fines
Narendra and Larry were fined for chatting, as were Betty, Joanne and Leigh for discussing the red scarf while others were talking.
Espie fined herself for almost having an accident for being kind and trying to give Betty a parking spot before the meeting began.
Happy Bucks
Andrew paid a happy buck because he was “chuffed a bit” by the kind comments made when he and Leigh announced their decision to move back to the U.K.
Ray noted that Sunrise’s Rob Morton was on the throne while visiting Rotary Club of Whitby but thanked Steve Mills for putting the picture in Snapd nonetheless. He reminded everyone that Nov. 19 is Toilet Day but noted things were a bit backwards in that Handwashing Day is Oct. 15.
Joe offered a happy buck for the great time he had in Ireland digging into his roots. Mike put money in the bucket to celebrate being nominated for the Todd Skinner Young Entrepreneur Award.
Bill gave a “sad” buck because he heard a car salesman (Ray) called a lawyer (Rob Morton) “cheap”
John Dale supplied a happy buck for becoming a grandfather again.
Birthdays and Anniversaries
Brian W said he would pay $5 if anyone could guess his age. Ray and Anne celebrated their 37th anniversary on Oct. 7 (35 have been good, according to Ray). Espie and Victor celebrated 19 years on Oct. 12 and Grant and Mary mark their 41st anniversary in October.
- 50/50 draw – Leigh, Narendra – no winners yet
Guest: Steve Mills - Snapd
Steve Mills joined us to talk about the impact of community publications. He noted there are 70 Snapd publications in the country, 25 in Toronto alone. He said local community publication has impact for a number of reasons, whether online, in social media or in print.
At the heart of it, he pointed out, is the story and that’s what a community publication is: it tells your story. In much the same way, Rotary tells a story.
Community publications “tell the story of those around you.”
Steve noted that marketing is telling your story and selling is influence. Your story superimposes over your brand. He said a lot of powerful business motivators don’t say work on your business, work on yourself.
The impact of a community publication is the mass audience that you can get all of the stories together. The value of community publications is they allow you to see everybody’s good stuff. They make people feel good and secure and you want to raise your business in that community, raise your family in that community because you know that community.

Slice of Life event a huge successMany people in our community are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Our club was pleased to share their stories at the first ever Slice of Life event held during World AIDS Week. This one-of-a-kind event was a first for the club and it was a resounding success! Participants enjoyed a 'slice' of food while making their way around the room to hear the stories of those involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
